The Aroma Of Spikenard

Many people do not initially like the
scent of the pure spikenard oil as it can be very over powering to the
senses. However, as the Holy Spirit begins to touch their heart
about the true meaning of pure love, surrender and sacrifice a miraculous
change occurs in the heart of the believer. They find they are no
longer repulsed by the scent but instead drawn by the beauty of the
scent.
Our Spikenard Ointment ~
Spikenard Anointing
Oil
is made using only extra virgin olive from Israel
and organic spikenard oil in a specific ratio given to us by the Holy Spirit in
prayer. Many describe this beautiful aroma as warm, sweet, spicy,
and musky. It can be used as anointing oil or for cosmetic
purposes.

Scripture References

pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the
feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house
was filled with the odour of the ointment. KJV
Mark 14:3
And being in Bethany in the
house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having
an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake
the box, and poured it on his head. KJV

In the scripture passages
listed above; Jesus is anointed with "ointment of spikenard". Some Bible
translations use the word "perfume" instead of ointment. However,
the term "perfume" can be misleading. Below you will find the
definition of ointment according to Easton's Bible Dictionary and Smith'
Bible Dictionary.
Easton's Bible Dictionary
- Ointment
Various fragrant preparations, also compounds for medical purposes,
are so called (Exodus 30:25; Psalms 133:2; Isaiah 1:6; Amos 6:6; John
12:3; Revelation 18:13).
Smith's Bible Dictionary - Ointment
(An oily or unctuous substance, usually compounded of oil with
various spices and resins and aromatics, and preserved in small
alabaster boxes or cruses, in which the delicious aroma was best
preserved. Some of the ointments have been known to retain their:
fragrance for several hundred years. They were a much-coveted luxury,
and often very expensive. --ED.)
Cosmetic. --The Greek and Roman practice of anointing the head
and clothes on festive occasions prevailed also among the Egyptians, and
appears to have had place among the Jews. (Ruth 3:2)
Funereal. --Ointments
as well as oil were used to anoint dead bodies and the clothes in which
they were wrapped. (Matthew 26:12)
Medicinal . --Ointment formed an important feature in ancient medical
treatment. (Isaiah 1:6; Jeremiah 8:22; John 9:6; Revelation 3:18) etc.
Ritual. --Besides the oil used in many ceremonial observances, a
special ointment was appointed to be used in consecration. (Exodus
30:23,33; 29:7; 37:29; 40:9,15) A person whose business it was to
compound ointments in general was called an "apothecary." (Nehemiah 3:8)
The work was sometimes carried on by woman "confectionaries." (1 Samuel
8:13)
From these
references we can see that "ointments" were used for many
different applications; anointing, funerals, medicinal,
cosmetic, bathing and personal hygiene. These
ointments were compounded of fragrant herbs, resins, gums,
seeds, flowers, spices and oil. Some formulas were
very simple and consisted of one active ingredient and olive
oil, while other formulas were a complex mixture of
ingredients.
The term fragrant
means the ingredients used to create the ointments had
distinct aromatic odours; herbal, medicinal, earthy,
balsamic, spicy, or sweet aromas. It does not mean
they had a sweet perfume fragrance like perfumes we buy at
the store today.
Ointments could have
a fluid or semi-solid consistency depending on the
ingredients used to create them.
The "Ointment of
Spikenard" mentioned in Mark 14:3 and John 12:3 was used to
anoint Jesus. It was done in preparation for the His
death and burial.
Jesus died on the
cross and shed His blood so that we would be able to receive
His Gift of Salvation, forgiveness for our sins, and eternal
life in heaven.
Spikenard is
symbolic and represents death to self and total surrender of
our lives to Jesus Christ.
The Ointment of
Spikenard can be used for several purposes. It could
be used to pray and anoint individuals for consecration
purposes, salvation, forgiveness of sin, terminal illnesses,
peace, deliverance, etc.
When we anoint and
pray for an individual or ourselves; we are petitioning
Jesus to intervene in our lives by faith. We must be
careful to present the true source of the anointing
correctly. Anointing oils or ointments, are only a
tangible symbolic representation of our faith.
The only true source for the anointing is Jesus Christ,
revealed by the Holy Spirit through The Word. We must also be
careful not to always associate "feelings" with the presence
and power of the Holy Spirit. Feelings can be very
deceptive. The Lord wants us to grow and have a mature
relationship with Him, knowing that He is there at all
times, whether, we feel His presence or not.
