Saffron is known to be one of the most expensive spices. This is because the stigmas of the plant are handpicked to make the spice. Saffron oil has a very interesting odour. It has a woody, spicy, hay like odour.
Saffron may contain up to 70% safranal. Safranal is a chemical found in saffron that has the potential to produce skin sensitization if used at inappropriate levels.
Safranal is restricted by the IFRA to 0.005% in consumer products with skin contact. This is recorded in the IFRA Standards 43rd Amendment.
