Extraction Techniques
Steam Distillation:
Extracting essential oils by steam/water distillation. Used for
most essential oils. Pressing: Extracting oil from the plant by applying pressure. Citrus oils are usually extracted this way.
Absolutes: Solvent extraction process. Hexane or/alcohol solvents are used to dissolve the plant/flower material and then removed from the final product.
CO2 Extracts: Plant material is extracted using carbon dioxide. Finished product may include plant wax, pigments and other compounds not found in essential oils.
Macerations: Process of infusing fresh plant material into a carrier or fixed oil. This process produces a product that typically has a soft, delicate scent profile that is encapsulated within the fixed oil. Maceration extraction methods can capture the difficult to extract flower essences such as rose, honeysuckle, lily, hyacinth and gardenias without the use of chemicals or solvents. This process also extracts other beneficial healing elements of the plant and flower.
Enfleurage Pomade: Process of extracting fresh flower/plant material into a solid fixed oil or fat. This ancient extraction method can capture difficult to extract flower essences such as rose, lilac, violet, honeysuckle, hyacinth and gardenias without the use of chemicals or solvents. This process also extracts other beneficial healing elements of the plant and flower.
Enfleurage pomades can be washed with alcohol to remove the actual flower oil, however, many times the amount of pure flower oil that can be obtained using this process is so minimal it is not cost effective. Unfortunately, some rare and exotic flowers have strong scents but yield very little oil that actually resembles the flower because the chemical scent profile is destroyed in the process.
Our enfleurage pomades are a wonderful way to enjoy the delicate scent of rare and exotic flowers that do not respond well to hexane or solvent extraction.
