EUCALYPTUS Eucalyptus belongs to the Myrtaceae (Myrtle) family and is an evergreen. There are hundreds of different species, Eucalyptus Globulus (Blue Gum) being the most popular. Eucalyptus essential oil is steam distilled from the leaves. The essential oil of each of the species mentioned below will smell similar; however, the chemical and healing properties will vary. Eucalyptus Globulus (Blue Gum) Strong camphor type aroma. Major chemical components are 1,8-cineole (up to 80%), alpha-pinene, limonene and globulol. Safety: Do not use on babies, children or sensitive individuals. Do NOT take internally. Psychological properties: uplifting and anti-depressant. This is a good oil to help you focus and clear the mind. Physiological properties: analgesic, anti-rheumatic,antiseptic, antispasmodic, expectorant and mucolytic. It can be used for colds and flu, stimulate circulation, and muscular aches and pains. Eucalyptus Radiata (Narrow Leaf) Softer and lighter eucalyptus aroma. Many will find this type of eucalyptus aroma more pleasant. Major chemical components are 1,8-cineole, limonene, alpha-pinene and para-cymene. Safety: Do not use on babies or small children under 10 years old. Do NOT take internally. Psychological properties: uplifting. Physiological properties: anti-inflammatory, antiviral and expectorant properties. Good for coughs, runny nose, scratchy and hoarse throat. Eucalyptus (Smithii) Eucalyptus Smithii has the lightest eucalyptus aroma and is the only eucalyptus oil suitable to use on children and sensitive individuals and is the only Eucalyptus specie that should be used on children. Major chemical components are 1,8-cineole (up to 80%), alpha-pinene, globulol and terpinen-4-ol. Safety: Do not use on babies or children younger than 6 years old. Do NOT take internally. Physiological properties: mucolytic and anti-infectious properties and can be considered for use with coughs, colds, flu and throat infections. Eucalyptus smithii can be both a stimulant and a relaxant, and will adapt according to the body’s needs. Eucalyptus smithii is recommended for long term use. How to use Eucalyptus: Adult Applications: Place a drop on the corner of your pillow at the first sign of a stuffy nose. Place a drop on a cotton ball and inhale. Place 3-5 drops in a pan of boiling water to diffuse into the air or add to humidifier. Add 5-10 drops to 1 cup of bath salts and add to bath water. Compress: 5-10 drops in ½ cup of boiling water, soak cloth, and wrap. Dilute in carrier oil and rub on chest, hands, and feet. Children: Dilute in carrier oil and rub on chest, hands, and feet. Place 3-5 drops in a pan of boiling water to diffuse into the air or add to humidifier. If signs of irritation develop discontinue use. A skin patch test is recommended before using any oil to determine if an individual will have an allergic reaction or sensitivity to an essential oil.
